Cyclone Tower
The assignment, undertaken on behalf of the company Cementi Rossi S.p.A. as a result of the analyses performed by the company TAI S.r.l., concerned the seismic evaluation and the consequent seismic improvement design of the Cyclone Tower, a 73 m high structure located within the cement production plant. The plant has been operating in the Marca Trevigiana, the Treviso area, since 1953 and occupies a vast area of more than 120,000 square meters.
Given the peculiarities of the assignment, the project envisaged reinforcement through the use of EB-FRP carbon fibers with high resistance to high temperatures (Fiber Reinforced Polymers, fiber-reinforced materials composed of fibers of various kinds impregnated in an organic resin).
To pursue and ensure an adequate level of safety, both structurally and in terms of resistance to the high operating temperature of the structure (85 °C), an epoxy resin tailored for this application was developed and tested. This was one of the first applications worldwide of a resin of this type.
