Former Monastery of St. Catherine

The former Monastery of St. Catherine (ex Monastero di S. Caterina) stands in the historic centre of L’Aquila and is the result of layered interventions, extensions and additions carried out over time to meet different functional needs.

The earthquake of 6 April 2009 and the subsequent seismic sequence seriously damaged the structures of the former monastery, severely testing the behaviour and strength of its load-bearing elements. ASDEA chose to intervene with innovative, durable and reversible methods and techniques, compatible with the material and structural identity of the building, paying close attention to the basic principles of restoration.

Sustainability is a key factor in ensuring that historic buildings can be preserved for future generations while maintaining their original features and historical value. The recovery of the former monastery was carried out with a focus on sustainability, adopting materials and techniques that minimise environmental impact, such as the use of renewable energy sources and the recycling of materials.

For ASDEA, sustainability is crucial to designing or restoring buildings with awareness of the alarming phenomenon of climate change. ASDEA is a member of GBC Italia, complements its services with economic, social and environmental sustainability consulting (LCC and LCA analyses, risk assessment, integrated modelling, etc.) and has a LEED® Green Associate™ on its team.
